  • General Description :
    • This project deals with the production of Intelligent Augmented Reality (IAR) and its use in aircraft maintenance and personal training applications. We propose to pursue methods and techniques to improve both the quality and relevance of information provided to the aircraft maintenance workers, as well as the delivery of this information in a clear and unambiguous fashion. We develop methods for determining what information is relevant to a specific aircraft, and methods for how to present the information and task instructions clearly in the context of the actual aircraft. Knowledge Based System (KBS) is the proposed approach for determining what information is relevant to the specific aircraft status. In particular, an ontology which is a formal representation of knowledge as a set of concepts within a domain and the relationships between those concepts, is used to describe the domain, and is used to reason about the entities within the domain. To manage knowledge of the domain, ontologies are provided as the structural frameworks for organizing nformation Augmented Reality (AR) is the proposed approach for how to provide interactive on-line assistance to maintenance workers in assessment and corrective procedures.
  • Summary of Objectives:
    • Develop an integrated demonstration system for selected A330 landing gear system maintenance tasks to demonstrate the benefits and capabilities of the new AR and KBS technologies developed within this program (listed below).
        1. Research and develop novel AR tracking methods suited to aircraft maintenance tasks.
        2. Research and develop domain ontologies for KBS and task support.
        3. Research and develop intelligent methods for providing KBS instructional maintenance media.
        4. Improve the quality and speed of maintenance procedures with KBS selection and AR presentation of task instructions and guidance.
  • Potential Long-term Benefits:
    1. 1. Increase the effectiveness and competitiveness of aircraft maintenance services by reducing time, reducing errors, and reducing costs through intelligent augmented reality task guidance.
      2. Reduce the time required for performance of maintenance procedures.
      3. Increase the certainty and correctness and effective procedures.
      4. Reduce the training required for maintenance personnel.
      5. Maintain competitive advantage in light of similar efforts in Europe, USA, and Japan.
